The Master of Science (MSc) in Economics Program
offered by the Hong Kong University of Science and
Technology has been a successful innovation that
provides well-balanced academic and applied training
in the subject. The program has two objectives.
First, we provide solid economics and analytical
training to students in order to prepare them for
further pursuit of the highest academic degree (PhD)
in any of the following subjects such as economics,
accounting, finance, marketing or management.
Second, the variety of applied courses offered in
the program equips students with sufficient
knowledge to enter the job market and benefit from
the good employment opportunities in Hong Kong,
Mainland China and elsewhere.
The MSc in Economics
Program takes advantage of the high standards of
research and teaching of the University. Using
English as the medium of instruction, the Program is
on a par with other economics programs offered
internationally. Currently there are students coming
to our program from the Canada, France, Germany,
United States, Mainland China and Hong Kong. The
Business School of HKUST, and its Economics
Department, has been repeatedly recognized as a
leading force in the international research arena.
Our professors, many
of them are leading economics researchers, are
dedicated to developing students with a balance of
applied and analytical skills. We have been
successful in placing graduates to a number of good
universities in North America, Europe and Asia for
PhD Programs. Graduates taking a more practical
route have been placed successfully with large
commercial banks, investment banks and Big 4
accounting firms. In the past, some of our students
from the Mainland China were able to find jobs with
Hong Kong employers such as the Hongkong and
Shanghai Banking Corporation and Cathay Pacific
Airlines. Their study and living experience in Hong
Kong will be an asset to them even if they return to
the Mainland for job opportunities.
