[eNews] International Symposium for Emerging Leaders

The 9th University Scholars Leadership Symposium was organized from1 to 7 August in Bangkok this year, by the Humanitarian Affairs Asia and the United Nations Development Programme. The conference is designed to develop the leadership and social change skills of emerging leaders from around the world.

The theme of this year was “Inspiring Confidence, Inspire Change” and attended by 1,057 delegates from 87 countries. Five students from the Global Business (GBUS) and World Bachelor in Business (WBB) were nominated to join this week-long event and were presented with great learning and networking opportunities. More importantly, they learned about how to become a socially responsible young leader.

GUBS student Thomas said it was an eye-opening experience to join the symposium and its service learning activities. “I was able to meet the local children and share the joy with them even though we do not speak the same language. I also helped on fixing and repairing roads, contributing to the local community and its people.”

Leia of WBB student said getting to represent HKUST at the conference was truly a life-changing experience. “Not only did I learn from some of the most incredible world leaders, but I also met some of the passionate students of my generation. The lessons I learned and people I met have reaffirmed my desire to serve as a voice for the voiceless and courageously fight for what I believe in.”

Nini, also from WBB said, "I entered this conference cautiously, curiously, and not knowing what to expect. I left hopeful, determined, and full of a deep sense of community. Our world is ready for change, and I am so excited to see how we will change it together.”
