[eNews] Double Success in International Case Competitions

Case competitions provide a valuable platform for students to address real-life business challenges. They can also learn from and compete with the brightest students around the world.

In February, both UG and PG teams participated in two highly competitive international case competitions in the US and Spain respectively, and took home the championship trophies.

At the USC Marshall International Case Competition, held in the US between February 19-23, 20 teams from around the world competed head-to-head in several rounds of case analysis and presentations. The HKUST UG team won the championship and the best presenter award.

Team member Chase CHO said the competition provided a great opportunity for them to compare ideas with that developed by other teams, while Desmond YIU said the event helped them sharpen business acumen and develop collaborative spirit. The best presenter Stephanie CHOU said they had been well-prepared for the USC competition, with training and experience in competing in five case competitions, while Stephanie CHAN attributed their success to passion and teamwork. The four members are all GBUS students.

In the same month, our MBA students have achieved similar encouraging results. Teams formed by Alexander IP, Changmin CHOI, Theodric WONG and Ruby HE were the champions at the IESE Roland Berger International Case Competition, which was held in Spain between February 14-16.

Alexander said the Enhancing Professional Skills (EPS) course, that they took as part of the MBA Program, has polished their presentation skills and guided them in making succinct and persuasive strategic recommendations in a consulting environment.

The team has not only beaten nine other teams from top business schools to secure its first place, but also won internship offers at Roland Berger, a global strategy consulting firm, for each of their members.

Earlier, another team of four MBA students, formed by Azeem RASHID, Raghav GUPTA, Mariano TRULLENQUE COSCOJUELA, and Devansh GOEL, finished in third place at the Illinois Gies MBA Strategy Case Competition in the US. Azeem also received the best performer award in the Q&A session.
