Welcome to the HKUST Business School website on Quality Assurance and OBE.

The pursuit of excellence in its teaching and research activities has been a hallmark of the HKUST Business School. The School has initiated international accreditation and ranking processes since an early stage of its development. In 1999, eight years since its establishment, it became the first school in Asia to go through the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation. In the following year its MBA program started its appearance on the Financial Times' annual global ranking.

These initiatives have now become part of the on-going process through which the School benchmarks itself against the market and seeks feedback.

In addition, starting from year 2007, under the auspices of the University (and the UGC), the School embarked on a new initiative known as Outcome-based Education (OBE), an approach in which student learning goals or outcomes are first specified in terms of what students are able to do upon graduation, then the curriculum, instruction, and assessment are re-organized to make sure that this learning ultimately takes place. The OBE process consists of four elements, namely,

  • the definition of intended learning outcomes,
  • the mapping and alignment of curriculum and teaching, learning and assessment activities to support those outcomes,
  • the assessment of the effectiveness in achieving those outcomes, and
  • the collection of feedback in order to improve the programs.
Much effort has been made in bringing the OBE approach on board to enhance teaching and learning of the School's programs.

In the meantime, the School has also introduced a number of measures to support quality assurance, under the guidance of the University. Such measures include the self review of programs according to the ADRI format as outlined in the Quality Assurance Council Audit Manual. All programs have completed a detailed questionnaire to evaluate its quality assurance mechanism and identify points of action for further improvement. Those points of action were summarized in an action plan with expected deliverables and time tables.
