In 1994/95, the Information Systems stream initiated one-year internship programs for students who have completed their second year of study. The aim is to encourage students to get a sense of what IS career is all about and equip them with practical work experience not available in classroom learning.

Selected students are granted one-year leave from study (usually from June/July to next year’s July/August) to join local companies as student interns and work in areas related to the IS discipline. Through the years, over 270 IS students took up one-year internships with the following companies:

Words from students previously on Intern programs

"Maturity is definitely one of the most important characters that every employer is seeking for from fresh graduates nowadays. Unfortunately, students from the ivory tower normally lack exposure to the real business world. Even though they have been striving for vocation internship, those are generally trivial and repeating tasks for a short working period. Therefore, if you have the ambition to be a stand-out from the cruel competition, why not consider being an early bird and bringing forward your career life? Thinking about the employment after graduation, the above is of great concern when I chose IS as my major.

Then after year 2, I opted for one year placement in Securities and Futures Commission IT department. There I was fully involved in a commission-wise project, given numerous exciting challenges, both technical like system testing and communicational like international video/audio conferences. While the basic knowledge learnt from class can be applicable, I also observed quite an amount of exceptions due to various factors – political, practical, cultural… None of my previous summer internships could provide me with such an experience and insight. Conversely, this evokes me to study harder in future with a critical thinking.

In addition, I vividly saw the significant role that Information System is playing in any fields including finance industry, and I am fully convinced of its perspective. When everybody is scrambling for an investment banking position or so, have you thought of alternative roads to Rome? Finally, wish you all a bright future!"

(Current final year BBA-IS student)
Intern Student at Securities and Futures Commission in 2007-08

"The one-year internship at HKJC gave me the precious experience in practicing what I have learnt from classes in the real IT industry. Through participating projects and cooperating with colleagues, I got equipped with the most advanced technology skills as well as strengthened my interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills. This internship program is good for developing my technical and business sense. I have now built up a clearer career path which prepares me for job hunting in near future."

Sharon Li, BBA-IS Yr3
Intern Student at Hong Kong Jockey Club in 2006-2007

"The HKMA placement program offered me a prime opportunity to learn from professional colleagues. The exposure to various systems provided me with chances to learn more about the latest technology and find out what should be done to develop my future career in the field of information technology. This was a precious and rewarding experience to me."

Ka-lok Siu, BBA-IS, 2006 Graduate
Intern Student at Hong Kong Monetary Authority in 2004-2005

"Working in HSBC gave me a chance to apply what I had learnt in lectures to a realistic situation and gain insight of the IT industry.  The program has also broadened my horizon and social awareness.  Techniques like how to work towards the corporation goal, tackle a problem, are not something that can be taught in classroom.  Only experience can make us become more mature and responsible.  The internship program has trained me to be tactful in interpersonal and communication skills and helped me build up my own positive business value and beliefs."

Daniel Lau, BBA-IS, 2005 Graduate
Intern Student at HSBC in 2003-2004

"The HKMA experience gave me the industry exposure in the financial sector.  During the summer internship in Citigroup Global Markets Asia Ltd, I had the precious experience in people diversity as my supervisors and colleagues are of different races and cultural backgrounds.  The practical courses offered by the BBA-IS program not only provide me with the fundamental concepts, but also enable me to understand the methodology to tackle real business problems encountered in work."

Jeff O K Tsang, BBA-IS, 2004 Graduate
Intern Student at Hong Kong Monetary Authority in 2002-2003
Intern Student at Citigroup in Summer 2003

"HP Consulting offers a broad range of technology-based business solutions to various communities in Hong Kong. During my placement in Hewlett Packard, I have taken part in building several business solutions with the leading technologies in the market, like the implementation of imaging workflow system and the development of data warehouse. The experience is valuable as I can learn from the experienced consultants and see how these large-scale projects are handled in terms of limited time and tight budgeting. This provides me an insight on how should I get prepared for my future career.

From the placement program, I realized that the skill to communicate tactfully is the thing we should learn and polish, especially in dealing with the clients. It is not the most important if you don’t have the required skills at this moment. Rather, being creative in problem solving and being a quick learner are the keys to success in the fast-progressing IT market."

Rayomnd C M Fok, BBA-IS, 2003 Graduate
Intern Student at Hewlett Packard (Hong Kong) Ltd in 2001-2002

"My gain from the placement experience is not only about learning how to complete assignments efficiently or to communicate well with different and difficult people; in addition, IBM helps me prepare myself to be competitive and tough to overcome challenges and difficulties in the future.

There were difficulties and problems that I have not encountered at school before, and when I need to fix the problems by myself, there were so many constraints making me hard to decide how to do. From these, I learnt not to be worried and frustrated all the time, as there must be a way to go. I learnt to always be responsible and have the sense of ownership when problems appear, because only this will make improvement. I think, this program helps me build up confidence and makes me well-equipped for my career."

Joycelyn S M Ngai, BBA-IS, 2003 Graduate
Intern Student at IBM in 2001-2002

"Information System Management is about how to apply information technology to achieve business goal, and I have experienced so much about this statement in the internship program. Working environment is similar to learning environment. You just keep on learning, but all by yourself.  No one is going to teach you everything. Yet, working environment is so different to learning environment. You may have no idea about the assignments you may receive and the problems you may encounter. Assignment is not based on the theories you learnt in class. So the key to success is to think fast, learn fast, respond fast and stay on track with the business goal of the company. You will gain good problem-solving skill, great learning power, and good communication skill. I’m glad to have joined the internship program. It really played an important role in my business degree study."

Karen K Y Lee,  BBA-IS, 2002 Graduate
Intern Student at Securities and Futures Commission in 2000-2001

"Information Technology, a rapidly blooming industry all around the world, leads various industries to enter a new era. As a famous financial and commercial city, Hong Kong needs the support of the IT sector to reach another climax.  The BBA-IS program equips us well with up-to-date IT information and techniques as well as general knowledge of business administration. This knowledge helps us form a better understanding of the needs of the commercial sector and provide the best solution.

The HKMA internship program offered me a chance to gain some practical experience and apply what I had learnt in the university. Through the 1-year working in HKMA, I got a better understanding of the IT career and the needs of a commercial company. It also enhanced my problem solving skills, as well as ability to work independently. This experience is really unforgettable and valuable for me."

Melody P Y Lo, BBA-IS, 2002 Graduate
Intern Student at Hong Kong Monetary Authority in 2000-2001

"The BBA program offers students with enormous excitement. I took part in 2 enrichment programs: internship and international exchange, and they turned the last four years to be the most fruitful part of my life.  My internship in Hewlett Packard Asia Pacific Co. Ltd was a rewarding experience. I was able to apply my academic knowledge in a realistic situation, brushed up my social muscle and absorbed the boundless intelligence from my experienced colleagues. The year spent in HP has equipped me with the tools necessary for my future occupations.  The exchange program granted me a semester of “California Dreaming”. University of Southern California provided me with exposure to different cultures and international students, which have given me a wider view of the world.

All these experiences have transformed me into a mature person with multiple perspectives and put me one step forward to a better career, and also broadened my horizon."

Harriet H H Ng, BBA-IS, 2001 Graduate
Intern Student at Hewlett-Packard Asia Pacific Co. Ltd in 1999-2000

"The placement program offers interns the opportunity to practise skills acquired in the college. The courses developed vital skills for students to handle IS development; while the internship program provided valuable insight for me to understand what additional skills I should possess before graduation. It is the best channel to know IT only if you have worked in the IT industry. And the department has provided us with a lot of opportunities to learn and practice in the leading firms in Hong Kong."

Tony H S Tam, BBA-IS, 2001 Graduate
Intern Student at Merrill Lynch in 1999-2000

"The intern program provides me with a chance to get a feel of the up-to-date business world.  HP provided various kind of internal and external training to me so that I am now an expert to HP-UX Systems.  From the intern program, I learnt that working in the IT field, aside from technical skills, we must also be professional in communicating with the clients and be a good team member in a project team."

Eric K S Tse, BBA-IS, 2000 Graduate
Intern Student at Hewlett Packard in 1998-99
