Franklin Prize for Teaching Excellence (Departmental)

This award sponsored by the Franklin and his wife Mei Kwong.  The purpose of the award was to recognize the collective effort made by a department in achieving overall teaching excellence, technically given by the highest average instructor overall score for a given 12-month period.

Franklin Prize for Teaching Excellence (Individual)

The Franklin Prize for Teaching Excellence was established in 2000 with donations from the Larry and Mei Kwong Franklin Endowment Fund to recognize business faculty contributions in the form of teaching excellence in the undergraduate and graduate degree programs. In the early years, 5 awards were presented each semester, one each for an undergraduate year, one for MBA required courses and one for MBA non-required/MSc courses.) Starting from Winter 06 Semester, the award was presented once a year and the number of award was reduced to 6 (1 for each of the 3 undergraduate years, 2 for MBA required courses and 1 for MBA non-required courses/ MSc teaching).

Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching

The Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching was established by the University Council in 1994 to commemorate the late Founding Council Member, Mr Michael G. Gale, for his distinguished service and outstanding contributions to the development of the University. The Medal is awarded each year at the University's Congregation to a member of the academic staff who best exemplifies continued pursuit of excellence, devotion to teaching, and the ability to inspire and motivate others.

Common Core Course Excellence Award

The Common Core Course Excellence Award is established to recognize excellent common core courses and the substantial efforts our faculty and instructors have contributed to the development and delivery of these courses. The Selection Committee will recommend one Award, and if called for, a maximum of three Honorary Mentions to the Committee on Undergraduate Core Education (CUCE) for confirmation.

Best Ten Lecturers Teaching Awards

The Best Ten Lecturers Election is an independent initiative of the students to show their appreciation for their teachers' good work and to express their vote of thanks to them. The election is run by VERTEX, the House II Students Association, in late November each year. All HKUST students are eligible to cast their vote online over the Student Intranet. The first awards were presented in 1996.

Academic Leadership, Research Awards and Fellowship

MGMT department ranks among the Top Fifteen management departments in the world in terms of faculty productivity for the recent seven years (2008-2014), based on the UT-Dallas survey of research publications in five premier management journals (Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal).

Prof JT Li has been elected Fellow of the Academy of International Business (AIB).

Prof J.T. Li appointed as Associate Editor for Strategic Management Journal, a top-tier academic journal in strategy.

Prof Riki Takeuchi appointed as Associate Editor for Academy of Management Journal, the flagship empirical journal in management.

Prof Yaping Gong appointed as Senior Editor for Asia Pacific Journal of Management (APJM), the official journal of the Asia Academy of Management (AAOM).

Prof Yaping Gong and Prof Larry Farh have received the 2013 Citation of Excellence Awards by Emerald Management Reviews.

Prof Melody Chao has received the 2013 Michael Harris Bond Award for Early Research Contributions by Asian Association of Social Psychology. This award recognizes individual who has made significant contributions to Asian social psychology, broadly defined as psychological research on social processes in the Asian context, of a basic and/or applied nature.

Prof Melody Chao has received the 2013 Early Career Award by International Academy of Intercultural Research. This award recognizes individuals who have made substantial contributions to the field of intercultural relations early in their careers.

Prof Huiwen Lian has received the Early Career Award 2012/13 by the Hong Kong Research Grant Council. This award is under the Early Career Scheme (ESC), each awardee would receive in addition to the funding of research and an additional amount of about $100,000 for undertaking educational activities including the training of undergraduate students.

Prof Larry Farh was elected as Vice President for International Association for Chinese Management Research (IACMR), the largest international professional association for Chinese management research with over 2000 paying members. He is also the Program Chair for the fifth IACMR Biannual Conference to be held in Hong Kong, June 2012.

Prof Riki Takeuchi has won the 2010 Distinguished Early Career Contributions Award by Society for Industrial & organizational Psychology (SIOP). This award is given to an individual who has made distinguished contributions to the science and/or practice of I-O psychology within seven years of receiving the Ph.D. degree. Winner of the IM Division Fundação Dom Cabral Best Paper in Strategy / IB Theory from Academy of Management, entitled:"Confidence in learning from others' failures: Foreign investment strategy in a transition economy." (Yang, J. Y., Li, J. T. & Delios, A.). This award is presented to the best scholarly paper of the IM Division focusing on Strategy / IB Theory at the Academy of Management annual meeting.

Winner of the Scholarly Achievement Award for 2011 from Academy of Management (HR Division), entitled:" The job-search grind: Perceived progress, self-reactions, and self-regulation of search effort." (Wanberg, C. R., Zhu, J. & van Hooft, E.A.J.). This award is presented to the most significant article in human resource management published in recognized journals and research annuals.
