HKUST students are free to form student societies and organize activities according to their own wishes and preferences so long as these activities are not against the laws of Hong Kong and/or the rules and regulations of the University.

All students are encouraged to choose to be members of student societies so that they can take an active part in extra-curricular activities and in campus life.

The Students' Union
The Students' Union is a legal body registered with the government and is independent from the University. All undergraduate students are assumed to be full members at the time of their registration as a student in the University. Postgraduate students may join the Students' Union as full members or associate members. The Council of the University recognizes the Students' Union as the only umbrella society for all student societies, and approves incorporating the name of the University in its name.

Students who wish to apply for membership may send their inquiries or applications to the individual student societies directly by e-mail.

Houses

A House System is in operation to promote campus life. There are a total of five Houses. Each House is associated with an undergraduate hall. Residents of an undergraduate hall are members of the same House. Non-residential undergraduate students are encouraged to join any of the Houses during the first two weeks of Fall Semester when Houses recruit new members, or they will be randomly assigned membership in a House. Postgraduate students, residential or non-residential, may join any of the Houses.

Under the guidance of Wardens and Tutors, Houses provide basic social units for student activities. In each House, there is a good mix of students by gender, school, year of study and residential status. Life within the Houses can facilitate interaction among students from different backgrounds and the development of leadership ability.

In each House, there is a House Students' Association formed by students themselves. The House Students' Associations work closely with the Wardens and Tutors, as well as among themselves in the promotion of campus life for members, including members of their Associations and for House members as a whole.
A series of inter-house sports and cultural competitions are also organized. Students are encouraged to take part in these activities as organizers, team members and participants.
