Invitation Taking a Measure of the RMB

The renminbi (RMB) is having a growing impact in international markets and there is intense interest in understanding its potential better. At the first seminar of the HKUST Business Insights Presentation Series 2014 to be held on 23 January 2014, Dr Dong He, Executive Director (Research) at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, will look at the RMB in Hong Kong, while Prof Edwin Lai of HKUST Business School’s Department of Economics will consider its use as an international invoicing currency.

RMB Fund Flows in Hong Kong: Developments and Prospects
Dr Dong He will review recent developments in the offshore RMB (or CNH) market in Hong Kong, which has seen rapid expansion in the past three years. He will cover such issues as the factors that determine the size of RMB deposits in Hong Kong and the distribution of RMB deposits in different offshore centers, how RMB fund flows are likely to evolve, and how to ensure adequate supply of RMB liquidity in offshore markets.

Internationalization of RMB
The internationalization of the RMB is typically seen as its international use for trade settlement or for denominating financial assets. But it is also important for it to be an international invoicing currency. Prof Edwin Lai will evaluate the RMB’s potential as a major invoicing currency in the Asia-Pacific region, and how the potential can be realized, by examining the historical experience of the USD, euro, pound sterling and Japanese yen.
