[eNews] The Center for Economic Policy Hosts Summer School on Socioeconomic Inequality

Last month, the Center for Economic Policy successfully held the Virtual Summer School on Socioeconomic Inequality 2021 for PhD students in economics and other social science subjects. The program was co-organized with the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Global Working Group (HCEO) of the University of Chicago and the China-Russia Eurasian Studies Center (CREC) jointly established by the HKUST(GZ) Society Hub, HKUST Business School, New Economic School, and Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO.

Two Economics Department faculty members – Professor Albert PARK, Head and Chair Professor of the Department Economics at HKUST, and Professor Shlomo WEBER, Adjunct Professor, President of the New Economic School and Director of CREC – served as program instructors along with other renowned scholars from the University of Chicago, Stanford University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Cornell University.

Fifty-eight students from various institutions in Hong Kong, mainland China, Japan, Korea, the USA, Australia, India, Singapore, the UK, Sweden, and the Netherlands, participated in the program. Students presented their research for feedback from the instructors and explored topics such as intergenerational mobility, randomized control trials and impact evaluations, economic models for social interactions, poverty and inequality in China, structural approach to empirical microeconomics, and linguistic diversity and social inequality.
